Management and Quality Commission
Sustainability has become one of the major strategic challenges for healthcare systems and, by extension, for radiology services. Aware of this reality, the Management and Quality Commission of the Interamerican College of Radiology (CIR) makes available to all its members the Decalogue for Sustainable Radiology, a practical tool that proposes ten lines of action aimed at integrating sustainability criteria into radiological practice, promoting changes in professional, organizational, and strategic areas.
This material has been prepared from the work led by Dr. Sara Lojo and published in the journal Radiología. Dr. Lojo is Editor of the CIR Virtual Journal, member of the CIR Management and Quality Commission, and coordinator of the SERAM Sustainability Commission. In this work, among other authors, Dr. Ángel Morales and Dr. Àlex Rovira collaborated. The document constitutes a practical reference for professionals, radiology services, and scientific societies committed to the development of more efficient, responsible care models aligned with sustainability principles.
The Decalogue addresses highly relevant aspects such as raising awareness and training professionals, reducing unnecessary use of paper and consumable materials, optimizing protocols and diagnostic tests, energy efficiency, responsible management of procurement and waste, promoting digital alternatives, and incorporating indicators to measure and monitor progress. In addition, it proposes complementary actions at the individual, team, and institutional levels, fostering a comprehensive and progressive approach to sustainability in radiology.
For this purpose, CIR makes this resource available to all its members and the national societies that comprise it, as a tool for consultation, awareness, and support in the design and implementation of sustainability strategies adapted to the different healthcare realities of the region.
From the CIR Management and Quality Commission, we encourage all professionals, radiology services, and member societies of the Interamerican College of Radiology to learn about, disseminate, and apply these recommendations. We are convinced that sustainability constitutes a shared responsibility and an opportunity to promote a more efficient, innovative radiology committed to future generations. Our goal is to contribute to extending these principles and best practices throughout the Ibero-American radiological community, fostering a sustainable transformation of the specialty based on continuous improvement, quality, and the responsible use of resources.
