The History Corner

LEO RIGLER

Leo Rigler (16 October 1896, Minneapolis - 25 October 1979) was an American radiologist and a great educator and researcher. He is remembered for describing the sign called after him. Through this sign one can diagnose the presence of inter abdominal air in radiological images obtained from the dorsal decubitus position. On the other hand, the pneumoperitoneum enables the visualization of air or gas in the abdominal cavity, which is contrasted with intraluminal gas and the gas present in the peritoneal cavity.
