We have always consider that taking part in CIR activities is one of the key elements for its evolution. In this way, it is fed, it becomes massive, it incorporates new visions and it guarantees the necessary exchange that allows to include all member countries within the board of directors. This creates a global view that relies on a governement plan in an open and transparent manner in order to set ujseful strategies for the fulfillment of the proposed policy.

These actions given in each elections period renew work plans and people in the compliance of the College by-laws. Currently, this participation is authentic and with a higher level of activity. This reflects the positioning of our isntitution, which has remained faithful to its main purpose: to promote the specialty and to improve its professional practice.

The CIR is now virtually present through the web and phisically present in events and strategic alliances with related international organisms.

It is also the entrance for new radiologists from the whole continent through the scholarships it grants. Furthermore, the training centers of CIR provides a high level of teaching quality.

We can say that the CIR evolves according to time and together with the radiological and techonological development.

Therefore, we invite you to participate even more in order to get the “CIR we all want.”

The History Corner.

Juan Manuel TAVERAS

Juan Manuel Taveras was a Dominican radiologist (Moca, Dominican Republic, 1919 - Santo Domingo, 2002). He was the Head of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor at Harvard Medical School. He is considered the father of neuro radiology in Nort America, since he worte the first texto book on the subject, and because he founded the American Society of Neuroradiology and a scientific journal of which he was the editor for several years.

In 1943 he obtained a PhD as physician at the University of Santo Domingo and later, in 1949, at the University of Pennsylvania. He carried out his residency at the Graduate Hospital of this institution, under the direction of doctor Arthur Finkelstein. He moved to New York under the tutorship pf doctor Ross Golden at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Together with doctor Golden he wrote the book Radiology of the Abdomen, published in 1952.

That same year he was appointed Director of Radiology at the Neurological Institute of New York. By that time, neuroradiology procedures in the United States were carried out by neurosurgeons. Taveras revolutionized the practice of the specialty in that institution: he developed a gadget for pneumoencephalography, he provided the department with new equipment and created a residency program in neuroradiology. In 1956 he organized a course ofr post graduates, which still exists today. With tact and experience, he proved that neuroradiologists could carry out and interpret all procedures in a safe and efficient way, and that subspecialization involved a better treatment of the patient.

He was the first president of the American Society of Neuroradiology, which was founded in 1962, and in 1964 he worte the first textbook on neuroradiology in English together with Ernest Word: Diagnostic Neuroradiology. In 1965 he was appointed Professor and Chairman of Radiology at the Mallinkrodt Institute ok San Luis, where he stayed for 6 years. Later he held the the position of Chief of Radiology of Massachusetts General Hospital, at Harvard University.

He was gifted with a brilliant mind and he intruduced several innovations in multiple fields: research, residents programs, the administration of radiological resources, and professional organizations had a global impact on the whole range of radiological and neuroradiological sciences. He wrote more than 250 artivles and several textbooks that became classics for neuroradiologists and also for other related disciplines.

At the end of the 1990s and at the beginning of this century, he published the first work on radiology in Spanish together with doctor Manuel Cardoso from Mexico. It consisted of seven volumes written un 325 authors and co aouthors of eleven countries memebers of CIR, which was published by the American publishing house Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

He encouraged the creation of the General Hospital of Santo Domingo and its Diagnosis Center, Advanced Medicine, Laboratory and Telemedicine (CEDIMAT), with state of the art technology for diagnoses and treatment of diseases. Because of this, CEDIMET has become one of the most important teaching centers in Latin America.
